Our client is seeking to appoint a talented and dynamic temporary Teacher of Physical Education to work within their hugely successful Physical Education Department. They have an excellent Catholic Ethos with a strong leadership team. The temporary Teacher of Physical Education position is available from January-July 2019. The ability to teach across all key stages 3, 4 and 5 will be an advantage. Students currently follow the Edexcel syllabus at GCSE and OCR at A level. Their PE department achieves outstanding results at Key Stage 3, GCSE and A level and all classes are taught in mixed ability groups from Year 7 onwards. Their extra-curricular PE programme is comprehensive and it is expected that the successful applicant will make a significant contribution to a highly successful department at District and County level. This post would be suitable for highly motivated NQT or experienced teachers who feel they can make a significant and positive contribution to the Physical Education department and the school as a whole.

To be responsible for the safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children/young adults.

  • Under the reasonable direction of the Headmaster carry out the professional duties of a school teacher as set out in the School Teachers Pay and Conditions Document.
  • To teach across the age and ability range as necessary and as requested by the Head of Department.
  • To participate fully in the curriculum development of the department, for example, updating existing units of work and developing new ones as requested by the Head of Department.
  • To keep a detailed and accurate Teacher Planner in accordance with school policy and ensure that assessment records both written and on Department network registers are maintained up to date.
  • To ensure that all policies and procedures as outlined in the school and departmental handbooks are adhered to and actively promoted, in particular that work is set for classes missed through absence and that this work is phoned in to the Head of PE or Second in Department.
  • To ensure that all classes are taught according to school policy and that National Curriculum and examination syllabus regulations are carefully followed at all times.
  • To contribute to the extra-curricular programme of activities according to department requirements to include running clubs and attending fixtures.
  • To ensure the effective, efficient deployment of class support.
  • To monitor student attendance and progress in relation to targets set for each individual ensuring that follow-up procedures are adhered to and that appropriate action is taken where necessary.
  • To assist in the use of analysis and evaluation of performance data.
  • To be responsible for the maintenance of subject displays in a designated classroom or area.
  • To support the Head of Department in all matters of quality assurance.
  • To liaise fully with staff and parents as necessary with respect to all aspects of their students’ progress.
  • To play a full part in the life of the school community to support its distinctive Catholic mission and ethos and to encourage staff and students to follow this example.
  • To engage actively in the performance management review process.
  • To act as a form tutor and carry out the duties associated with the role as outlined in the generic job description.
  • To contribute to PRE, Citizenship, ICT as required.
  • To assist in the implementation of the behaviour management system in the school so that effective learning takes place.
  • To undertake any reasonable task as directed by the Headmaster or Head of PE.
  • To comply fully with all relevant statutory regulations as well as all school policies, Health & Safety regulations etc. communicating effectively with all relevant stakeholders including colleagues, students, parents and outside agencies as appropriate.

Personal Specification

The person appointed would need the following qualities:

  • Qualified teacher status.
  • Support the aims and objectives of the school.
  • Preferably have a Good Honours degree qualification in Physical Education or Sports Science.
  • The ability to teach PE to Key Stage 3, 4, and A-level.
  • Excellent classroom management skills with the ability to stimulate, encourage, develop and motivate all pupils.
  • The ability to offer support to and liaise with other staff easily.
  • The ability to liaise effectively with parents.
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good organisational skills including the use of ICT for administration.
  • Good ICT skills and an interest in developing the use of ICT within PE lessons.
  • To be willing to support the school in the provision of extracurricular activities within the department.
  • Drive and enthusiasm.
  • Dedication to improving standards of teaching and learning.
  • Good ability to manage student behaviour.
  • A willingness to learn and use the opportunities available for professional growth and development.
  • A willingness to participate fully in the pastoral system of the school as both a form teacher and part of the pastoral team.
  • A commitment to co-educational 11 - 19 comprehensive education.
