An opportunity has arisen to join the Property Teams responsible for promoting the South & West Lakes portfolios through a range of traditional and digital marketing and communications channels. The role offers the right candidate a rare mix of elements - to work across a range of popular indoor and outdoor visitor destinations with a fascinating mix of heritage; working within a wider support structure of a large organisation and marketing departments, whilst promoting a charitable cause where you can see the direct impact of your work locally. What it's like to work here

The West Lakes:

Our West Lakes portfolio in the Lake District is the third largest portfolio, by area, in the National Trust and we account for around 7% of its land. This is about 15,800 hectares of valley, lake and fell in Wasdale, Eskdale & the Duddon Valley. This includes 26 tenanted farms, large areas of common land, 14 residential cottages, and a number of other buildings including climbing huts, and Wasdale Hall - the YHA in Wasdale.

The South Lakes:

Our South Lakes property in the Lake District, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the most diverse, interesting and challenging portfolios in the whole of The National Trust. Millions of people visit the Lakes every year and one of our key challenges is how to connect more and in better ways with these people, from all round the world, when they are here. How do we make them Trust supporters? We look after some of the most beautiful and iconic parts of the Lake District around Hawkshead and Coniston, with very strong links to Beatrix Potter and her legacy of land, farms and buildings and artwork.

What you'll be doing

Working flexibly across the two portfolios, you’ll lead the development and delivery of the Marketing and Communications plan for the portfolio’s to achieve their business objectives and connect people with the work of the Trust as a conservation charity. You’ll work with the property teams and wider consultancy to promote visits, programming, volunteering and participation, restoration work, fundraising, commercial operations and our land agenda to name a few. You’ll be the key driver for communications with visitors, the wider community, as well as internal communications. The role will suit a media-savvy, creative individual with experience in a press and public relations or digital marketing environment and interest in history and gardens.

Who we're looking for

You will have a passion for communications, a preparedness to try new things and an aptitude for developing relationships to promote our diverse work and cause messaging through creative and eye-catching marketing and communication channels. It's a busy and fast-paced environment so you'll need to be extremely well organised and flexible, able to think on your feet and prioritise your work. You’ll be working from several offices, mainly in Coniston and Wasdale, and with a wide range of people and places. It’s a fixed term role - to test how it works for us all - with a view to taking it forward after the first year.

Superb written English, an eye for detail, first rate planning and an ability to work to deadlines are essential. Excellent digital skills, confidence handling images, acting as a brand ambassador, leading a professional calm approach to handling customer queries, complaints or contentious issues, working with databases and social media platforms are vital. Also, you'll have an enthusiasm for the Lake District with all the amazing places that we look after here, outdoors and in for visitors from all round the world.

You will have;

  • Practical experience in a marketing role or in some aspects of marketing communications
  • Experience of developing and implementing marketing and communications plans
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation: marketing codes, data protection, copyright and model release
  • Proven track record in creating, using and editing content in different channels (web, social media, PR, email)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to spot potential risks to reputation and escalate them accordingly
  • Have excellent interpersonal and networking skills, with the ability to influence, advise and negotiate at all levels within the organisation and with external agencies
  • Well organised and able to manage multiple priorities and varying pressures to meet measurable targets and deadlines
  • Strong understanding of the importance of online presence and ways to promote visits to our website and social media channels
